Our fertility service brings together medical assessment, fertility blood testing and specialist ultrasound scanning within one doctor-led clinic.

At The Blackheath Clinic, Dr Eoghan Mac Sweeney and Lead Sonographer Lydia Agaeiby work closely together to provide coordinated, compassionate and personalised fertility care. Collaborative Care

Doctor and Sonographer Working Together

Fertility assessment often involves more than one investigation. Blood-test results can provide information about reproductive hormones and ovarian reserve, while ultrasound can provide important information about the ovaries, follicles, uterus and endometrium. Our collaborative approach allows these different findings to be considered together.

Depending on your individual circumstances, your fertility assessment may include:

AMH testing
Female fertility hormone testing
Pelvic ultrasound
Transvaginal ultrasound
Antral follicle count
Follicle tracking
Assessment of the uterus and ovaries
Review of menstrual history
Review of ovulation history
Review of previous fertility investigations
Medical interpretation of blood-test and ultrasound findings
Discussion of appropriate next steps

Rather than receiving separate tests without context, patients can benefit from a more coordinated assessment where the findings are reviewed alongside their medical and fertility history.

Blood Testing

Fertility Blood Testing

Blood tests can form an important part of fertility investigation. Depending on your circumstances, testing may include:

AMH – Anti-Müllerian Hormone
FSH
LH
Oestradiol
Progesterone
Prolactin
Thyroid testing
Other relevant blood tests where clinically indicated

The appropriate tests depend on factors such as your age, menstrual cycle, symptoms, medical history and reason for seeking fertility assessment. Your doctor can advise which investigations may be appropriate rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all testing approach.

Ultrasound Scanning

Fertility Ultrasound Scanning

Ultrasound provides important structural and functional information as part of fertility assessment. A fertility ultrasound may assess:

The uterus
Endometrial lining
Ovaries
Developing follicles
Antral follicle count
Structural abnormalities where visible
Changes occurring throughout the menstrual cycle

For many fertility investigations, a transvaginal ultrasound provides the clearest view of the reproductive organs. The procedure will be explained beforehand and your consent obtained before the examination.

Ovarian Reserve

Antral Follicle Count

An Antral Follicle Count (AFC) involves using ultrasound to count small follicles visible within the ovaries. It is commonly considered alongside AMH testing as part of ovarian reserve assessment.

The result should not be viewed in isolation. Age, menstrual history, hormone results and other clinical factors may all be relevant when interpreting fertility investigations. Your ultrasound findings can therefore be reviewed alongside your wider medical assessment.

Cycle Monitoring

Follicle Tracking

Follicle tracking involves ultrasound examinations during the menstrual cycle to monitor developing ovarian follicles and changes in the endometrial lining. It may help provide information about:

Follicle development
Timing of ovulation
Endometrial development
Cycle progression

More than one ultrasound appointment may be needed depending on the purpose of monitoring and the stage of your cycle. Lydia can perform the ultrasound monitoring, with medical review available where appropriate.

Coordinated Assessment

A Coordinated Fertility Assessment

One of the main advantages of receiving fertility investigations within a multidisciplinary clinic is the ability to consider different pieces of information together. For example, your assessment may combine:

1

Medical History

Your doctor reviews your fertility history, menstrual cycle, previous pregnancies, medical conditions and previous investigations.

2

Blood Testing

Hormone and ovarian reserve tests may provide information about reproductive function.

3

Ultrasound Assessment

Ultrasound provides information about the uterus, ovaries, follicles and endometrium.

4

Medical Review

Your results can then be considered together and explained in the context of your individual circumstances.

This can help provide a clearer picture than relying on an individual blood test or ultrasound result alone.
