A Calm, Clinical Scan for Early Pregnancy Reassurance
Early pregnancy can be exciting — and also full of uncertainty. Our Early Pregnancy Reassurance Scan is designed for parents who want clear answers, time, and compassionate care during the first trimester.
Whether you've had symptoms that worry you, you're waiting between NHS appointments, or you simply want peace of mind, this private early pregnancy scan in Blackheath provides reassurance in a professional medical setting.
We work alongside NHS maternity care and do not replace routine NHS screening scans.

What This Scan Checks (And What It Doesn't)
What we assess during the scan
Your early reassurance scan focuses on the key early pregnancy checks, including:
- Pregnancy location (intrauterine where visible)
- Gestational age estimate and dating
- Heartbeat detection when clinically appropriate
- Number of pregnancies (single/multiple)
What this scan does not replace
This scan does not replace NHS screening scans, including:
- The 12-week dating scan
- The 20-week anomaly scan
If anything requires further assessment, we will explain it clearly and advise appropriate NHS Early Pregnancy Unit or maternity follow-up.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Pregnancy scans can feel stressful if you don't know what will happen. We keep everything calm and clear from the start.
Before your scan
- No referral is needed — you can self-book online
- Please arrive 10 minutes early
- You can eat and drink as normal
- A comfortably full bladder may help for an abdominal scan (we can guide you at booking)
- If you believe you may be earlier than expected (for example 5–6 weeks), we may suggest waiting until around 7 weeks for the clearest reassurance
During your scan
- Your scan is performed by an HCPC-registered diagnostic sonographer
- Most early pregnancy scans start abdominally
- If the pregnancy is very early or images are unclear, a transvaginal scan may be offered (only with your consent and only if clinically appropriate)
- We explain what we can see in real time and you can ask questions throughout
- Appointments are unrushed, in a calm clinical room
After your scan
- You receive an explanation of the findings straight away
- Images are provided where possible
- You'll receive a written summary/report depending on the scan type and gestation
- If further assessment is needed, we guide you on the next steps clearly and sensitively
If You're Very Early (5–6 Weeks) — What You Should Know
It's common to feel anxious very early in pregnancy. At 5–6 weeks, it may be too early to confirm everything, and sometimes a heartbeat may not yet be visible.
This does not always indicate a problem.
If reassurance is limited due to early gestation, we will:
- explain what is visible and what is not
- advise the most appropriate next step
- recommend a follow-up scan if clinically appropriate
For the clearest heartbeat visualisation, we often recommend booking from 7 weeks onwards.
